The first earthquake, which measured Mw7.2, happened in Yaracuy. This earthquake happened at 18:04 VET. It was classified as a foreshock, and was followed 39 seconds later by a Mw 7.5 mainshock.[5] The larger earthquake's epicenter was also in Yaracuy. Both earthquakes caused damage across the country, mainly in La Guaira and Caracas, the capital.[4] The mainshock is the largest earthquake in Venezuela since the 1900 San Narciso earthquake.[6] The earthquake was felt in several countries such as Brazil, Aruba, and parts of the Dominican Republic.
